Mondial du Merlot 2023

A huge success was achieved by Merlot 2020 selection from grapes from Moravíno Valtice winery, which took our only gold from the evaluation. One of only 57 gold medals awarded at the competition. The silver medal was awarded to the Merlot 2018 Reserva from the world competition of the very successful Milotice B\V winery. The Czech Republic had six samples among almost four hundred wines, from 165 producers of this variety from 14 countries.

"This important award is very binding for us, given the high international level of this competition. The wine, which "hinted" at its originality by winning the title of champion of the Valtice Wine Market in 2022, was aged for one year in wood (50% barrique and 50% in large oak barrels). After racking, it was aged for a further year before being released for sale. This resulted in an interesting composition of aromas and flavours," commented Ing. Ludvík Budín, owner of the Moravíno Valtice winery.

The World Varietal Championship is traditionally organised by VINEA and is one of the competitions on the list of VINOFED, the organisation that brings together the world's most prestigious wine competitions. Of course, it has the patronage of the OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine) and the expert supervision of the Swiss Union of Oenologists. The Czech Republic was represented on the 20-member jury by Miroslav Majer, director of DAVINUS s.r.o.
