Moravian and Czech wines are not only successful in international competitions in Europe or America, but also in Africa. Z 27. The Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards 2023, the largest and oldest wine competition on the black continent, held inSouth Africa, took home 3 Grand Gold, 4 Gold and 2 Silver medals in a competition of more than 1500 wines from all over the world. The participation of wines from the Czech Republic was financially supported by the Wine Fund and organised by the National Wine Centre.
The most successful representative of Moravian wineries at the competition was the winery of Karla Novotnáfrom Milotice u Kyjov, which can be proud of one of the big gold medals and added one more silver. The highest number of precious metals was recorded by the Žůrek winery with 3 gold and one silver medal. The remaining large gold medals were shared by the wineries Štěpán Maňák and Vinofol, which also won a second silver medal.
"The final week of my July this year traditionally belonged to the Michelangelo Awards in South Africa just outside Cape Town in the outskirts of Stellenbosch. The judging took place at the Lourensford winery where a total of 1555 samples of wines and also spirits were prepared for the judges. The composition of the international judges was very diverse, allowing each panel to be made up of a variety of peoplesKarel Novotný from the winery of the same name, who took part in the evaluation for the Czech Republic, said: "I personally think that the Czech Republic can boldly participate in such challenges as the competition on the other side of the globe. Our wines are moving forward and there is certainly no reason to fear failure. It was an honour to participate in the Michelangelo Awards and I hope to visit South Africa again."
The Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards was established in 1997 to offer South African producers the opportunity to have their wines judged by a highly experienced and respected panel of experts from around the world. Since 2003, the competition has become international in terms of the wines involved, opening up to wines from all over the world and becoming the largest wine event in Africa. All the samples entered are judged blind by panels of five according to the internationally recognised 100-point OIV rating system.
